When i was younger this was one of my FAVORITE movies. Hell, it still has a soft spot in my heart and makes me wish I was a little less girly, and a little more athletic (even if its just for a few seconds) so I could attract a baler who was into girls with B cups and 6 packs and fall in love over a common interest.
I myself however would end up being the pink barbie barbie doll loving, DDD cup and slightly pudgy tummy having, BAP. I’m too lazy for the B Ball life.
I used to watch this movie almost every week in my early teens, then around 16-17ish I kinda stopped watching it — Ok, I’ll be truthful, I scratched up the DVD. Recently I made an Amazon.com order of some “black” moviesĀ that I love(this, Jason’s Lyric <3, A Low Down Dirty Shame, and The Brothers).
I popped it in the DVD player as a 21 year old and sadly didn’t get the same overall affect that I did as a 13 year old. For those who have never watched it — well too damn bad I’m about to spoil it. SHIT, its been out long enough, if you haven’t seen it then that’s your fault.
Some parts were still as magical to me as when I first watched it. When Quincy asked Monica to be his girl and ride on his bike to school my heart melted like I didn’t know that within 10 seconds of their new relationship he would Chris Brown her ass to the ground calling her a dog and other assorted names just because she said “I don’t have to do what you say” . Go on girl for your 11 year old independence! Another magic moment that would choke me the hell up was, you guessed it, the love scene. Whats more perfect then having your cherry popped while hearing Maxwell sing “This Woman’s Work” in the background after finding out that a college wants you to do something you love? To add to that, having your twat popped by a young sexy Omar Epps? SHIITTT.
As the movie progressed I started to have a different feeling all together about the relationship of Monica & Quincy, and my over all love of the movie. See it all started at the scene where Quincy just found out his father had cheated on his mother. He was sitting on some bleachers looking for some compassion from Monica on the situation, which she was clearly giving him to the best of her abilities. She stated to him that she had curfew and had to go back to her dorm, but that she’d call him when she got in to talk some more about the situation. Evidently that wasn’t sitting too well with Q and he was mad at her for the fact she didn’t stay when he was hurting. He even fucked around on her with some other girl taking her to burger king, which to him wasn’t nothing, but shit its a date!
This is where the 13 year old Alyson differs from the 21 year old Alyson.
The 13 year old Alyson was mad mad MAD. I was mad that Monica left her man in his time of need. How could she just tell him she had to go when he was hurting like that. Serves her ass right, that’s why she lost her “good man” to her foolish love of basket ball.
The 21 year old Alyson? FUCK OUTTA HERE QUINCY! Here goes another man on some bitch shit. I understand you are hurting Q-dawg, but Monica had to go, she had curfew. Its not like she said “well, whatever ninja i got to go — bye bitch”. She let him know that she was under a manditory curfew and if she didn’t obey then she could be benched or even cut from the team. Mostlikely she had a full or partial scolorship for playing ball at the school and needed to stay in good standing with the coach. She even said “i’ll call you when I get in”. That wasn’t good enough for Quincy. Shit, I didn’t see no rings on her fingers, no kids in tow. Its not like she didn’t love or care about him — she was just living in reality and knew what she had to do. Aint nothing wrong with that.

LMFAO! You are so damn comical. But even when i was younger I thought he was wrong for holding that against her…Hell, if it were me I would have left too. *shrugs.
